Get to Know the Lakes Around Charlotte

One feature that attracts many newcomers to Charlotte is the variety of terrain and local amenities in the area. The close distance to the mountains or the beach, the mild weather throughout all four seasons, and the several lakes and bodies of water in the area are all factors contributing to Charlotte’s likeability. With three lakes to choose from for entertainment and lifestyle, it can be difficult to decide which one is right for you. Here are a few details about each lake to help that concern.

 

Lake Norman

Big lake, small towns. Home to Davidson College, Lake Norman is located north of Charlotte and spreads through Mecklenburg, Iredell, Lincoln, and Catawba Counties. The lake is fed by the Catawba River and drains into Mountain Island Lake to its south. Easily accessible by I-77, Lake Norman became popular for real estate and development with an influx of homes, restaurants, golf courses, and more after being created by Duke Energy. Some places of interest on the water include Lake Norman State Park and Jetton Park. The Lake Norman area offers several go-to places for families as well, including Discovery Place Kids, Lake Norman Mini Golf, and the Carolina Raptor Center. Don’t miss the popular Carolina Renaissance Festival which comes to Huntersville each fall.

 

Mountain Island Lake

South of Lake Norman and northwest of Charlotte, sits Mountain Island Lake, a smaller and more tranquil lake scene compared to the others in Charlotte. Mountain Island Lake’s primary function is to provide drinking water for residents of Mecklenburg and Gaston Counties but has since become a popular place for boating, fishing, and residential living as well. Some popular recreational areas include Hornets Nest Park and Latta Plantation Park, where guests can enjoy horseback riding, fishing, walking trails, and other outdoor activities. Latta Plantation also plays host to many seasonal events throughout the year, honoring the area’s rich history and culture, and is a go-to spot for family visits or school field trips. Some popular communities in the Mountain Island Lake area include Stonewater, Mountain Point, Mt. Isle Harbor, Preservation Pointe and Overlook.

 

Lake Wylie

The oldest lake on the Catawba, Lake Wylie was first created by a dam near Fort Mill in 1904, and was then rebuilt in 1924. Lake Wylie is easily accessible off most major highways and is conveniently located near Charlotte Douglas International Airport. The I-485 loop, in addition to I-77, I-85 and SC 49 provide easy access to the lakefront homes and condos. Newer developments like Audubon, The Sanctuary, and The Palisades offer high-end homes with wooded lots and luxurious waterfront clubhouse amenities. The lake sits on both North and South Carolina, stretching from Gastonia and Belmont through Charlotte to Tega Cay and Fort Mill. Popular area attractions include the U.S. National Whitewater Center, Anne Springs Close Greenway, and Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden. Outdoor lovers are also able to spend time hiking and camping at McDowell Nature Preserve. The South Carolina Strawberry Festival is a popular event in Fort Mill, celebrating the start of spring each year.

 

With three lakes spread throughout the Charlotte and surrounding areas, the Queen City can be an outdoor enthusiast’s dream home. The area is filled with places to live, work, and play while enjoying the beautiful outdoors. With three lakes, countless greenways, and that perfect Carolina weather, neighbors in the Queen City have an abundance of options for lakeside living.
