Prepping Your Home for the Carolina Heat

Whether you’re native to the Queen City, or facing your first Carolina summer, you’ve already gotten a taste of the heat that’s soon to ensue. With high temperatures approaching, you’ll need to do more than swapping out your winter wardrobe. We’ve compiled our summer home to-do list to make things simple, easy and as cool as possible.

A Quick Runthrough

The first slew of items to knock off your summer checklist begins with simple tasks like checking your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, replacing batteries if needed. It’s also a good idea to dust off your fan blades and vents to remove any lingering or trapped particles. Consider having your AC unit tested by a professional, as well, to refresh filters and ensure all is in working condition to keep your home cool and efficient. Not sure of who to call? Summertime Pests

You’re not the only one looking to escape the summer heat.. protecting your home from insects slipping indoors is a must. While an ant trail can be an easy fix with an over the counter solution, some pests like cockroaches or termites need professional attention. We recommend having a local pest control expert visit your home to ensure it’s fully protected against unwanted summertime guests.

Your Grounds

There’s nothing quite like the smell of fresh cut grass in the summer, but be sure your lawn mower is set on the highest setting to prevent it from cutting your lawn too short - this could expose your grass to the extreme heat leading it to dehydrate and brown. When it comes to surrounding plants and foliage, it’s best to water first thing in the morning but not necessarily every day. We love chatting with local nursery experts to see what plants will survive the heat and how to maintain them! Here’s a few of our favorite local spots:

While we can’t promise you won’t break a sweat checking these items off your list, we can promise you and your home will feel much better approaching the Carolina heat! If you have any questions or need local recommendations, be sure to reach out to your Helen Adams agent who will happily send you in the right direction.
